Washington Wine and the Recession

In May there was an AP article going around about Walla Walla and how much of a dire straits it was going to be for them going into their May Spring Release and the recession.  It was such a negative article and from someone in Los Angeles whose only source was one person who no longer lived in the valley. And of course, Spring Release was a success.  So, when I saw the title of this article I was ready to lunge...

Thank you.  This is  one of the most positive articles I have seen in awhile regarding the recession and wine. In Walla Walla there are still several quality wines available holding affordable prices.  In fact, last week I visited Columbia Crest (I do at least once a year) and for the dollar and the quality, the wines are an excellent buy.  So we may not be able to buy that $100 trophy wine to show off or no longer buy the $40 wine for our every-day-sipper, but we can still save those wines for special occasions, as long as the end result is - - Buy Washington.

I only moved here last September. I'm absolutely loving it here in Washington. I knew I was going to be moving here a few months before, so started looking for Washington wines locally in Southern California.

I couldn't find many at all, and very few in my under $20.00 price range. It's not because Washington isn't making fabulous wine in every price range, either, even now. It's a matter of getting the word--and the wine--out to consumers. We've got wine and wine-makers to suit every taste and pocketbook here, but we need to make sure everyone remembers that.

And, yes, everything I'm seeing suggests that 2009 is going to be an important year.
